COVID-19 Practice Performance Tracker For the Week Ending 8/16/20

By Staff
Wednesday, August 19, 2020 12:10 AM On a national level, there was little change in optical sales over the past week in all service/product categories except contact lenses. Tiny upticks of only 1 or 2 index points indicate a relatively flat market for gross revenue, exams/refractions, frame units and lens pairs, while sales of contact lenses were down slightly by -3 index points. Even as COVID-19 spreads throughout the country, how have optical sales maintained a healthy level of activity, particularly over the past five weeks, returning nearly to the level they reached just prior to the pandemic? One reason may be found by taking a closer look at the capture rate, according to data provided by GPN/EDGEPro.

Wednesday, August 5, 2020 12:10 AM Once again, the U.S. optical business showed positive signs of slight growth even while the pandemic’s “new phase” has become “extraordinarily widespread,” as announced by Deborah Birx, MD, White House physician overseeing the coronavirus response. Many states actually experienced a decrease in the number of coronavirus cases over the past week, according to the CDC COVID Data Tracker, although that appears in part due to the fact that so many had already reached a peak of the highest number of cases ever in those states. Small upticks in the U.S. optical business over the past week ranged from 2 index points for contact lenses to 4 index points for frame units and lens pairs.
