When comparing this with the same week (Week 37) of the previous two years, 2021 was comparable to 2020 because Labor Day also fell within Week 37 of 2020 but not 2019, according to Jobson’s most recent Practice Performance Tracker. All optical sales categories decreased substantially last week because of the Labor Day holiday.

In 2019, the actual Monday Labor Day holiday did fall within Week 36 of 2019 but not in 2020.

The national average for gross revenue at ECP locations increased by 1 index point, bringing it to within 1 index point of the level it reached at this point last year and 3 index points above where it was in 2019. All optical sales categories, except contact lenses, experienced slight upticks last week. Exams/refractions had the largest increase of 3 index points, while contact lenses at the other end of the sales spectrum decreased by 1 index point. Rounding out the increases were lens pairs, which were up 2 index points and frame units, up 1 index point.

In fact, the national average for gross revenue at ECP locations not only regained the -16 index points it lost the previous week (July 5-11) but also added an additional 2 index points last week for a total increase of 18 index points, according to the latest Practice Performance Tracker from Jobson. Last week, all optical sales categories not only regained the losses they experienced the previous week but also surpassed their prior levels.

U.S. Optical Sales Show Substantial Declines Due to Independence Day Holiday for Week of July 5-11, Jobson’s Latest Weekly Tracker Shows

Wednesday, July 14, 2021 12:27 AM NEW YORK—Last week, July 5-11, substantial declines in optical sales were experienced on a nationwide level as a result of Independence Day, which was celebrated with a Federal holiday on Monday, July 5, rather than on the more traditional July 4. As a result, the Independence Day holiday fell within Week 28 of this year (but within Week 27 of the previous two years).
