BENSENVILLE, Ill.—France-based Luneau Technology Group recently announced its merger with Optovue, a privately held medical device company, headquartered in Fremont, California. Founded by Jay Wei in 2003, Optovue develops high-speed OCT and OCT-A technology to diagnose and manage eye diseases. Luneau Technology pioneered wavefront-based diagnostic and finishing solutions and led the development of highly automated solutions for the past 15 years. Dr. Marc Abitbol, CEO of Luneau Technology, will preside over the newly merged company, while Optovue CEO Peter Wyles will join the global leadership team.

“It’s unprecedented what we will do together,” said Abitbol. “We’re two agile companies with a startup mentality of innovation and flexibility. Together, we now have a full pipeline that covers everything for visual health. Optovue’s OCT expertise, stellar reputation and primary position in the medical eyecare market, and complementary portfolio of products, make us an ideal partner, so our combined company can offer complete end-to-end solutions in retail, refraction and medical markets for primary eyecare.”

The newly merged company has combined sales of $176 million, 700 employees in 120 countries, and offers a wide range of products, according to a press release issued by the group.

Luneau said the automated technologies of the combined group, from refraction to diagnostics, can play a pivotal role in helping eyecare professionals, which number fewer than 700,000 globally, service a population of 7.2 billion people. An example of the technology is the Visionix VX650, recently introduced by Luneau Technology USA, which features multimodal anterior and posterior segment analysis is now FDA-approved and available for sale in the U.S.

Later this year, Optovue will also be launching a new OCT-A screening device. “One technology will look at the front of the eye, like a camera, and the other the back of the eye so our technologies are very complementary,” Abitbol added. These new technologies aim to transform and improve access to all patients in the U.S. and Canada, to help preserve their visual health according to Luneau.
