MENTOR, Ohio—After 50 years of leadership in providing a comprehensive range of coatings for eyeglasses and sunglasses, North American Coating Laboratories (NACL) has announced the closure of its Rx prescription ophthalmic coating department. In response to industry changes and the evolving needs of eyewear manufacturers and labs, NACL said it has observed a significant trend of labs adopting their coating equipment to meet the growing demand for anti-reflection coatings. Many labs are also handling their mirror coatings, contributing to a shift in the landscape of the optical coating industry.

As a result, NACL has strategically diversified its coating capabilities over the past decades, focusing on industrial, infrared and specialty hardcoating areas. This decision allows NACL to continue providing cutting-edge solutions in these specialized fields.

Effective Jan. 1, 2024, NACL will cease processing Rx work for its customers. Jobs received prior to this date will be completed and returned as usual. Any work received after Jan. 1, 2024, will be returned at the customer's expense.

"We understand that this decision may raise concerns and questions among our valued customers and partners," said Brian Wilson, president and CEO of NACL. According to Wilson, the NACL team expresses deep gratitude to its customers for their trust and partnership over the years and looks forward to continuing to serve their needs in other coating specialties.
