ST. LOUIS—The Global Myopia Awareness Coalition (GMAC) has announced that the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) has joined the coalition as an association member. This marks a significant growth of GMAC’s reach into the Canadian eyecare professionals’ sector, whose role is vital to successfully raising awareness and promoting action to address childhood myopia as a treatable disease. As an industry coalition, GMAC was founded with a mission to promote public awareness of childhood myopia as a treatable disease through direct-to-consumer channels and awareness with governments, NGOs, and other health care associations. GMAC does not advocate for specific clinical approaches.

But a major question always remains: how do you let patients know that this is something they can participate in? It’s easy to forget to set your blister packs and used contact lenses aside for recycling, and even easier to throw them out without looking up whether or not they are even recyclable.
