The 'Comptometrist'—Is There a Better Way to Determine Myopic Power? |

When 14-year old Harini Venkatesh’s younger sister visited the eye doctor for her first checkup and came home complaining that she hadn’t been able to tell what was blurry and what wasn’t when the doctor had asked, she thought to herself, there has to be a better way to do this. “It was jarring to realize that her experience at an optometrist’s office would be very different than mine.” So she set out to find a solution and ended up winning second place in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge with Discovery Education, for her prototype titled The Comptometrist: An Efficient Way to Determine Myopic Power.

Rock4Sight 2023 to Feature Five Tribute Bands in Benefit Concert for ECN Purpose
NEW YORK—Rock4Sight 2023 will be back at the Hard Rock Café to celebrate the optical industry and raise funds for ECN Purpose, a 501c3 charity dedicated to providing both eye health education and connection to vision care to the underserved. The party begins on Saturday, March 18 at 8:30 pm at the Hard Rock Café in Times Square, New York City. As in the past, this will be a fun night of music, dancing, camaraderie and industry fellowship.

NEW YORK—Diane Hilal-Campo, MD, knew she wanted to be an ophthalmologist from a young age—but she had no idea that she wanted to be the founder of a makeup brand called twenty/twenty beauty. Her father, neuroradiologist Sadek Hilal, MD, influenced her desire to enter the medical field in some way, but, as she tells VM, “it was as a young girl, when I first visited ophthalmologist Dr. Stephen Trokel, one of the inventors of the excimer laser that is used to perform Lasik, that I became fascinated by ocular health. He prescribed me my first pair of glasses, and being able to see the beauty of the world with such clarity changed my life.”
