VMAIL Weekend had an opportunity to talk with Johnson & Johnson Vision’s Thomas Swinnen earlier this month. Swinnen, who is president, North America, with responsibility for J&J Vision’s U.S. and Canadian businesses, is a strong supporter of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives. J&J Vision was one of the first companies to sign the 13% Promise, an initiative created by Black EyeCare Perspective to increase equity and representation in the industry and in optometry schools by increasing the number of Black students to mirror the 13 percent of Black people in the U.S. population. Swinnen spoke to Weekend about DE&I and how J&J Vision is working with its partners to increase diversity and support underprivileged students in the U.S.

PARIS—In an announcement issued earlier this week, Kering Eyewear said it will acquire Maui Jim, Inc. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 1987, Maui Jim is the world’s largest independently owned high-end eyewear brands with a leading position in North America. In its announcement, Kering said, "The acquisition of Maui Jim represents a major milestone in the successful expansion strategy of Kering Eyewear. Only a few months after the acquisition of Lindberg, Kering Eyewear will own a second proprietary brand, reinforce its status in the high-end eyewear segment and broaden its offer to cover the full scope from functional to timeless and fashion luxury products." Celesta Ferreira, OD, was raised by hardworking, entrepreneurial parents, who taught her at a young age about management quirks and realities. Not surprisingly, her end goal was to own her own business, and that idea only grew as she attained her optometry degree. A native Texan and family-oriented person, she had a few items on her location checklist.
