How Dick Paul Became Desmond Drue

What makes a man take on an assumed name and a new identity? There are many reasons. For instance, maybe he’s a criminal who is evading the law, or is in a witness protection program. Perhaps he’s a con man, or even a spy. Or he could be suffering from dissociative disorder. Then again, he might be a performer using a stage name, or a writer doing business under a pen name. The possibilities are vast. I recently learned that the man I’ve known for years as Dick Paul has crafted a new name and persona for himself. Many readers probably know him as a successful independent optical sales rep. Lately, Paul has been showing a very different face to the world, that of Desmond Drue, an accomplished novelist, poet and screenwriter.

25th Anniversary Accessories Council Awards Celebrates Eyewear Industry and Other Heroes on a Star-Studded Night

NEW YORK—On Tuesday night, the Accessories Council hosted its 25th anniversary ACE Awards event at Cipriani 42nd Street, a star-studded New York City staple, which returned for a live, in-person evening. The night, an annual dinner and awards show gala to honor excellence in the accessories sector, was themed Honoring Our Industry’s Heroes, and spotlighted the ways in which the accessories sector has stepped up throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Hosted by Karen Giberson, the president and CEO of the Accessories Council, and Frank Zambrelli, Design Quadrant chairman of the Accessories Council board, the 2021 ACE Awards also featured a series of celebrity speakers including Whoopi Goldberg, who presented an award to designer Christian Siriano, and Ciara, who presented an award to designer LaQuan Smith.

BOSTON—The sixth annual Theia Awards of Excellence were presented here on Tuesday at the end of the Women In Optometry (WO) Women’s Leadership Conference, which was held in conjunction with the American Academy of Optometry’s Academy meeting in Boston. Each year, WO asks readers and friends to submit the names of women who have been extraordinarily influential in the industry. Each year, hundreds of women ODs are nominated, and the WO advisory board votes for the winners.
