Retinal cells derived from a cadaver human eye survived when transplanted into the eyes of primate models, an important advance in the development of cell therapy to treat blindness, according to a study published on January 14 in Stem Cell Reports. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), a layer of pigmented cells in the retina, functions as a barrier and regulator in the eye to maintain normal vision. RPE dysfunction can lead to eye disorders including macular degeneration and can cause blindness, which affects about 200 million people worldwide

GLENDORA, N.J.—Lincoln Road Advisors Inc., an investment company operated by optical industry veteran Eric Bertrand, has acquired the holding company Refac Optical Group, which owns the U.S. Vision optical business, from its majority owner ACON Investments. U.S. Vision operates roughly 375 optical locations in licensed retail spaces at J.C. Penney, Meijer, Boscov’s and Optical Center/AAFES Exchange locations. Bertrand, a former chief executive of OptiCare Health Systems of Connecticut and Vision Center at Meijer, confirmed the acquisition by Lincoln Road to VMAIL earlier today. He is the principal at Lincoln Road, and also manages the digital marketing agency Mod Op.

NEW YORK—Vontélle Eyewear was born, at least partially, out of coincidence, when friends Tracy Vontélle Green and Nancey Harris both lost expensive pairs of eyewear within the same year. While shopping for replacement frames, both women found that they couldn’t find exactly what they wanted, and, so in 2019, Vontélle was born. Vontélle focuses on designs featuring textiles, patterns and colors from the African diaspora. Since the onset of the pandemic, Green and Harris have also been producing masks in the same patterns as their eyewear, and have coined the phrase #FullFaceFashion to describe what they do.
