NEW YORK—I recently returned from a week-long vacation to Ireland. When our flight landed in Dublin, I stood up and gathered my things, ready to disembark. I put on my jacket, wrapped up my scarf, and slid my sunglasses onto my face—only for the friendly Irishman seated behind me to laugh and say, “Ah, you won’t be needing those here! It’s always overcast.” While my momentary airplane friend might’ve had a point about the Irish weather, he was wrong about one thing—as many of us know, our eyes benefit from UV protection all the time, not just on hot, sunny, summer days. Exposure to UV rays, even for a short period of time, can damage our eyes, and long-term exposure can lead to cataract, macular degeneration, growths on the eye, and eye and skin cancer. Those harmful UV rays don’t disappear just because the sun is hiding behind a cloud.

AlTai says that her coaching methodology for professional and personal success “combines my experience in brand building and marketing with training in nutrition, fitness and mindfulness to help emerging entrepreneurs build businesses the healthy way.” AlTai’s presentations will be interspersed with panel discussions by women ODs and followed by a lunchtime small-group discussions.

Sydney Madrigal is a third-year student pursuing her Master’s degree in Public Health as well as her doctorate in optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Though she spent most of her life in South Florida, Madrigal is of Cuban decent and has created Latina Optometrist, a light-hearted and inspirational page that gives a voice to one of the minority groups in the optical industry. “Upon starting school in Birmingham, I knew I would be a minority in my class, but over time I realized I was also a minority in the field,” Madrigal explained. “My parents didn’t know much about applying to optometry school, I was pretty much on my own; this is what made me really start to think about the potential impact I could make.”
