SCENE + HEARD: Discover 20/20 Magazine: The Art of Packaging Lens Options By Staff Thursday, November 7, 2019 10:00 AM There’s a movie called “The Legend of 1900” that I have never watched the entirety of… it’s not that great—but it has an excellent scene in it that I’ve found myself referencing time and again in a variety of situations. In the movie, Tim Roth plays a piano prodigy who has spent his entire life on board a ship at sea. Learning that he’s ultimately going to have to leave and learn to adjust to life in a world he’s never known, he opts instead to stay on board and go down with the ship, explaining his choice in musical terms. With a limited number of keys on a piano, he says knowing what tune each of them make, he can perform infinite music; with an infinite number of keys from which to choose though, he says he can make no music whatsoever. Too many choices can leave a person stymied and unable to make any choice at all. The same holds true in the realm of opticianry, especially for a patient not well-versed in optics, choosing the right pair of lenses with myriad materials, treatments, PALs and other features can leave them at a loss for what’s the right choice.
