RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.—VSP Ventures announced yesterday the acquisition of University Optometry, a boutique optometry practice based in Palo Alto, Calif. Founded by Dennis Ratinoff, OD, in 1971, University Optometry has built a reputation for delivering comprehensive eyecare and improving quality of life for patients through uncompromised service and state-of-the-art technology, VSP's announcement said. “For over 48 years, the University Optometry team has been dedicated to ensuring great vision and eye health for patients in their community,” said Steve Baker, president of VSP Ventures. “We’re proud to welcome them to the VSP Ventures family and build upon their legacy of exceptional eyecare.”

A graduate of the UC Berkeley School of Optometry and a United States Air Force veteran, Dr. Ratinoff has been practicing optometry for nearly 50 years. In addition to comprehensive eye exams, Dr. Ratinoff has extensive experience in treating diabetic eye diseases and co-managing cataract surgery patients, as well as pre- and post-operative care for Lasik surgery patients.

“In preparing to enter the next chapter of my career, I wanted to find the right partner to transition my practice with,” said Dr. Ratinoff. “With VSP Ventures, I found a truly unique path to evolve my practice with a partner that shares my care-focused vision and passion for comprehensive patient care.”

University Optometry will continue to operate under the same name. Additionally, the practice’s staff, Dr. Ratinoff, and his associate doctor will remain in their roles.

Earlier this year, VSP announced the launch of VSP Ventures, as VMAIL reported a business unit designed to offer a care-focused choice for doctors looking to transition their practices, according to VSP.

VSP Ventures' other deals this year include the acquisition in August of six Nevada offices of EyeZone and in June, a joint venture with Rosin Eyecare of Chicago to acquire two practices in Nashville, Tenn.
