NEW YORK—The national average for gross revenue at ECP locations increased last week, June 20-26, at a rate of 3 index points. That places gross revenue at a level 7 index points above where it was at this point in time, Week 26, when compared with last year, 3 points above Week 26 of 2020, and 9 points above 2019, according to Jobson’s most recent Practice Performance Tracker. All optical sales categories increased last week when compared with the previous week, ranging from 3 index points for gross revenue, exams/refractions and lens pairs to 1 index point for contact lenses.

Frame units increased at a rate of 2 index points. Optical sales categories were mixed when comparing last week’s optical sales with the same period last year. Gross revenue experienced the largest increase (7 index points) when comparing Week 26 this year with the same period last year. Also up were exams/refractions at 3 index points and contact lenses at 2 index points. Both frame units and lens pairs were down -1 index point when comparing this year with last.

Although all optical sales categories increased when comparing last week with the previous week, only one category remains at a level above an average week in 2019—the index baseline assigned a value of 100 for this Optical Business Tracker. Gross revenue reached a level of 111 index points last week, while all other categories below the 100-point benchmark were equal at 97 index points.

Jobson Optical Research selected 1,500 optical locations that have been operating and reporting their sales to its partners, GPN and ABB Analytics, since 2019. The index has been rebased to an average week in 2019. Going forward, this new index base will be used as an arbitrary benchmark and assigned a value of 100.
