NEW YORK—Optical sales showed little change last week compared with the previous week, according to Jobson’s most recent Practice Performance Tracker. The national average for gross revenue at ECP locations decreased by -1 index point last week (July 26-Aug 1), below the levels this category had reached during the comparable period both last year as well as the previous year. Two categories remained flat (exams/refractions and lens pairs) and two categories increased by only 1 index point (frame units and contact lenses). The national average for gross revenue at ECP locations being the only category to decline but only by -1 index point.

With negligible change last week, the various optical sales categories remain similarly positioned as the previous week when compared with an average week in 2019 (the index baseline assigned a value of 100 for this Optical Business Tracker). Gross revenue remains well above an average week in 2019, while the other four categories are hovering closer to being equal to an average week at this same point in time two years ago.

Jobson Optical Research selected 1,500 optical locations that have been operating and reporting their sales to its partners, GPN and ABB Analytics, since 2019. The index has been rebased to an average week in 2019. Going forward, this new index base will be used as an arbitrary benchmark and assigned a value of 100.
