TURIN, Italy—Italian eyewear company Vanni presented its second Impact Report this June, which details the projects the company completed in 2023, particularly in relation to the objectives laid out in its 2022 Società Benefit. In 2023, Vanni stated it was “particularly committed to sustainability,” and one of the focuses of the year was conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of its products. According to Vanni, the LCA is “an analytical and systematic methodology for the assessment of the environmental impacts of a product—or the amount of CO2 released—throughout its life cycle: from the extraction of raw materials all the way to its disposal.” For Vanni in particular, this encompasses the extraction of raw materials, the processing of these materials, the production of the eyewear and the arrival of the eyewear at Vanni’s warehouse.

The study was commissioned by the Bicocca University of Milan, in collaboration with Liito. Vanni reported: “the impact in terms of CO2 (the main cause of climate change) of the V1632 eyewear model is 2.35 kg, a number below the average reference values of the sector.” Vanni stated that this is largely due to its use of Italian raw materials, and its choice to manufacture everything in Italy. The study of Vanni products was calculated on the basis of a frame model that is representative of the entire production of acetate glasses.

In a release, Vanni said, “On top of this, the positive data on our CO2 emissions is not an end point, but rather a starting point, as we now know where we can act to further improve ourselves. This is our commitment for years to come, as we have established in our impact report.”
