NEW YORK—The producers of the film “Sight: The Story of Vision” have released an eBook as a companion piece to the documentary by Koenig Films Inc., which debuted on most PBS stations on Oct. 13. The Sight eBook was underwritten by a grant from CooperVision.

Sight: Story of Vision Second Screen App is also now available for download on the website. This app, funded by Essilor, allows viewers to access additional content associated with the documentary.

The one-hour film, which covers the science, technology and medical aspect of vision, previewed at Vision Expo West at an event supported by Carl Zeiss Vision and Luxottica. Attended by more than 200, the event included a full screening of the one-hour documentary and a question and answer session with the filmmaker Kris Koenig; Jens Boys, president, SVP Independent Eyecare Professional, Carl Zeiss Vision; and Ludovic Ladreyt, senior VP, Optical Channel Sales, Luxottica NA. At the event, Koenig announced the completion of the companion eBook, by Mark Mattison-Shupnick, ABOM, director of education for Jobson Optical Group.

Mattison-Shupnick said, “As a member of the Advisory Committee for ‘Sight,’ I was asked to take an active role in editing the film’s script and to create an eBook, as a deeper dive into the documentary. What might have been a short review quickly turned into a project to highlight and illustrate the rich content about the medicine, technology, science and extraordinary humanity shown in ‘Sight.’

“Through the transcripts and film clips, we hope to introduce many of the extraordinary people interviewed to viewers. This teaches more of the complexity of vision, the variety of vision problems, the importance of an annual eye exam, the joy of beautiful eyewear, the freedom of contact lenses and the enormous need for better vision around the world,” he said.

The “Sight” companion eBook is an “ePub” file that can be viewed using an iPad, Kindle or most other eBook readers as well as Apple or PC computers. For iOS devices (Apple), download and copy the eBook to view in iBooks. For PC, Windows and Android platform systems use a reader platform like Adobe Editions or Calibre.

Users can download the eBook (about 550Mb) from the StoryOfVision.com website by clicking here. Users can also download the eBook from local public TV affiliate websites in cities when the “Sight” documentary is shown this month. In addition, the eBook will be made available at a number of optician and other meetings on flash drives (courtesy of Luxottica) starting with the Opticians Association of Massachusetts meeting, which will take place from Nov. 5 to 6.
