Herman (Hy) Schwartz.

BOCA RATON, Fla.—Herman (Hy) Schwartz, an optical industry veteran, died here on Jan. 31 at age 89.

Schwartz started his optical career in 1950 working for Sterling Optical at its original location on Fulton Street in New York City. As the company grew he took on more responsibility and became an integral part of Sterling Optical’s executive management team.

Moving into operations, Schwartz was instrumental in all facets of supporting the growth and operations of Sterling Optical, opening new locations, and managing purchasing, distribution and laboratory operations. As early innovators, under his leadership, Sterling Optical was among the first retail chains to install finishing labs in all retail locations and provide one-hour service.

Schwartz is survived by his three sons, David, Jonathan and Eric. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 4, 11:00 a.m. at Cedar Park Cemetery, Block 5, 735 Forest Ave., Paramus, N.J.
