Jack Jue.

SAN MARINO, Calif.—Optical laboratory veteran Jack Jue passed away here on Oct. 14 following an illness. He was 77 years old. In 1975, Jue founded a full-service optical lab, J.L. Optical in Los Angeles. The lab, which was a member of the Global Optics buying group, was acquired by Hoya Vision Care North America in 2005. In 1988, Jue founded iCoat, a full-service laboratory specializing in thin film optical coating. Essilor acquired the lab, which is located in Santa Fe Springs, Calif., in 2014.

Jue was a pioneer in commercializing and growing the AR coating industry in the U.S. He helped introduce advanced coating processes, including hydrophobic coatings.

Jue was active in optical industry trade associations, sharing his knowledge and offering guidance to colleagues. He served as president of the California Optical Laboratories Association from 1990 to 1992. COLA honored him with a West Coast Goodfellow award in 1992. In 2003, the Optical Laboratories Association inducted Jue into the Optical Pioneers Hall of Fame in recognition of a lifetime of innovation and service in the optical industry.

A private funeral will be held on Nov. 10.
