MONTREAL—New Look Vision Group Inc. (TSX:BCI) cited the addition of 15 net new stores over the past 12 months as a key factor in its record sales of $55.4 million and adjusted EBITDA of $10.9 million during the second quarter ended July 1. Sales and adjusted EBITDA increased 9.7 percent and 5.2 percent, respectively, compared with the year-ago quarter, the company reported.

The recent sales and adjusted EBITDA totals compare with $50.5 million and $10.4 million, respectively, in the year-ago quarterly period. New Look Vision also noted that it achieved same-store sales growth of 4.6 percent in the second quarter and 3.3 percent for the first six months of 2017. The company has recorded 12 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth.

In a statement late last week, company president Antoine Amiel said New Look had a “solid quarter with respect to revenue growth from both comparable and recently acquired stores.” He also noted that the “quarter ended successfully as New Look Vision entered into a definitive agreement to acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares of Iris The Visual Group.” That acquisition is expected to close on or about Oct. 1.

In the second quarter, New Look Vision reported that adjusted net earnings were flat at $4.6 million compared with the comparable period. Net earnings attributed to shareholders totaled $2.6 million in the second quarter, which compared with $4.1 million last year. The company attributed the decline to “higher acquisition costs, equity-based compensation and other non-comparable costs.”

New Look Vision operated 227 corporate stores as of July 1 and calls itself “the largest retail optical group in Canada,” with a leading market position in Québec, the Maritimes and the Ottawa region. It has three business banners: New Look Eyewear, Vogue Optical and Greiche & Scaff.

Looking ahead, Amiel said New Look Vision will “continue to aggressively monitor opportunities arising from the ongoing consolidation of the Canadian retail optical industry.” The company agreed to acquire Iris The Visual Group in early July, as VMail reported.

Iris is a leading retail eyecare provider across Canada with a network of 150 locations, comprising 53 corporate, 77 jointly owned and 20 franchise locations, according to the deal announcement.
