MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Commercial Appeal newspaper here reported last week that Luxottica Retail North America plans to reduce its workforce at its Hickory Hill, Tenn., manufacturing facility by about 200 employees at year’s end.

The newspaper cited a Department of Labor and Workforce Development alert that was issued to Memphis-area officials.

Luxottica has significantly expanded its distribution and lab facilities in the Atlanta area and has been transitioning processing work to this hub facility. Massimo Vian, Luxottica’s co-CEO, noted in a March 2016 conference call with analysts that a planned enlargement of the Atlanta hub would allow the company to use its new lens service model one in which both frames and lenses are assembled and distributed from a single location, as VMail reported
