DALLAS—Essilor of America has been notified by the federal government that it has an interest in “certain promotional activity occurring in the lens industry” and has requested information concerning several of Essilor of America’s promotions.

In a statement posted on Essilor’s website today, the lens maker said “We are providing the requested information and intend to address whatever concerns the government may have. We are also taking this opportunity to proactively review all of our promotional programs. We believe that our proactive approach is in the best interests of our company and our customers.”

Steve Nussbaumer, president of the Essilor Lab Group, sent a letter to Essilor’s customers advising them of the government’s request. In the letter, Nussbaumer said Essilor is reviewing all of its customer programs and promotions “to ensure that they are aligned with industry requirements. In some cases, we have updated and standardized the terms of programs; in other cases we have replaced programs with newer programs. It’s our belief that this review and standardization is in the best interest of our customers and our company and underscores our unwavering focus on the success of the independent eyecare professional.”

Nussbaumer told Essilor customers that most of them have not been, and are likely not to be affected by any changes to Essilor’s promotional programs.

It is not yet known if other lens companies have also been asked to cooperate with the government’s probe.
